My name is Amy Emmerson.

Enthused by nature, life cycles and our ability to evolve through adversity, I turned to a career in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

I was inspired to train to be a therapist by my own experiences of having therapy, which supported me through difficult times. I can only describe my therapy as transformative. I am passionate about the importance of therapy and think most people would benefit from some.

Sometimes people believe they have to be at their absolute worst to get therapy or feel things could be worse so they don't think therapy is for them, but that is a myth. Therapy is a form of self care and no problem is too small.

I am a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and I am based in Hull and the East Riding. I offer therapy on Beverley Road in Hull and outdoor walk and talk therapy in Hull, Cottingham and Beverley.

The areas I can help you with are:

  • Stuckness
  • Anxiety
  • Grief and loss
  • Miscarriage
  • Baby loss
  • Identity issues
  • Walk and talk therapy in nature

I have a full DBS check, insurance and am registered with UKCP.

Why am I called cocoon?

I chose the name cocoon because I see the therapeutic relationship like a cocoon: a liminal, safe, holding space where you can transform and emerge. At one level, the cocoon is about feeling safe.

Therapy must be and feel safe. It’s also about transformation – the caterpillar within the cocoon, literally breaks apart, becoming a pulpy, mushy soup in order to be transformed.

My experience of therapy felt like a place where I could become a kind of mush in this protective and confidential relationship and rebuild my understanding of myself, others and the world.

This is what I offer my clients.

What does therapy look like?

Therapy isn't really like in the movies. You will not be lying down on a couch. It's a two way, active and creative process.

When there are times where words just don’t cut it, therapy can involve scribbling on flip charts, practising breathing techniques and using playdough, stones or buttons to express and understand. Sometimes it will be about being quiet and other times there might be laughter. It can be outdoors, indoors or even over the internet!

The most important part of therapy is the relationship between you and I. The security you feel and the confidence you have in yourself with your therapist, are the foundations that make personal growth and insight long lasting.

My years of experience have helped build resilience, openness and empathy towards people going through life’s challenges, no matter how big or small you may find them to be.

It can be a challenging journey, but if you are willing to journey, so am I.

Therapy sessions cost £55 for a 50 minute session.

I currently work from 267 Beverley Road, Hull and I offer outdoor walk and talk therapy in or near Hull, Cottingham and Beverley.
